Research
Strategic Researcher Priorities
Trauma NB is focused on these 5 strategic research topics below. Take a moment to review the topic, Research Question and Rational along with other details.
Research Question
How do injury severity and patient outcomes differ among individuals injured while operating or riding off-road vehicles and emerging vehicle types such as e-bikes and e-scooters based on the use or non-use of protective devices?
Rationale
Off-road and recreational vehicle trauma remains an important cause of serious injury in New Brunswick. While previous work has described the epidemiology of these injuries, less is known about the relationship between protective device use and patient outcomes. Understanding how helmet and seatbelt use influence injury severity, mortality, length of stay, and healthcare utilization can support evidence-informed injury prevention initiatives and public awareness campaigns. Expanding the scope to include emerging vehicle types such as e-bikes and e-scooters will provide a more comprehensive understanding of evolving injury patterns and associated healthcare burdens.
Research Question
What is the relationship between blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and injury severity, mortality, discharge destination, facility, and healthcare utilization among pedestrians, passengers, and drivers injured in motor vehicle collisions?
Rationale
Alcohol impairment is a well-established risk factor for motor vehicle collisions; however, the relationship between blood alcohol concentration and trauma outcomes is less clearly understood. Examining differences in injury severity, mortality, discharge destination, and healthcare utilization across BAC categories can identify populations at increased risk of poor outcomes and provide evidence to support injury prevention, impaired-driving initiatives, and public health interventions. Consideration of transfer status and timing of BAC testing will improve understanding of alcohol involvement among seriously injured patients.
Research Question
Among trauma patients requiring endotracheal intubation, what induction, post-intubation sedation, and post-intubation analgesia agents are being used, which medication regimens are associated with post-intubation hypotension, and among patients who develop post-intubation hypotension, how frequently are vasopressors administered?
Rationale
Post-intubation hypotension is associated with adverse outcomes in critically injured patients. Variability in induction, sedation, and analgesia practices may influence the development of post-intubation hypotension and subsequent management. Understanding which agents are being used, the frequency of post-intubation hypotension associated with those agents, and how often vasopressor support is initiated following hypotension will provide evidence to support quality improvement initiatives and future refinements to the Trauma NB Rapid Sequence Intubation (RRSI) Consensus Statement.
Research Question
Among patients included in the Trauma NB Registry, what patient, injury, and clinical characteristics are associated with experiencing a subsequent major traumatic injury resulting in another Trauma NB Registry admission?
Rationale
Repeat traumatic injuries contribute substantially to patient morbidity and healthcare utilization. Identifying characteristics associated with trauma recidivism can improve understanding of populations at increased risk of recurrent injury and support the development of targeted injury prevention strategies.
Research Question
What is the risk of falling among older adults in New Brunswick, what factors contribute to loss of autonomy, and what barriers and enablers influence participation in fall prevention initiatives?
Rationale
Falls are a leading cause of injury, hospitalization, and loss of independence among older adults. Understanding fall risk, loss of autonomy, knowledge of fall prevention, and barriers to participation can inform prevention programs, community supports, and aging-in-place initiatives.
