While previous work has described the epidemiology of these injuries, less is known about the relationship between protective device use and patient outcomes. Understanding how helmet and seatbelt use influence injury severity, mortality, length of stay, and healthcare utilization can support evidence-informed injury prevention initiatives and public awareness campaigns. Expanding the scope to include emerging vehicle types such as e-bikes and e-scooters will provide a more comprehensive understanding of evolving injury patterns and associated healthcare burdens.

Alcohol & motor vehicle injuries

Blood alcohol concentration and outcomes following motor vehicle collisions.

View study details

Strategic research priority

Blood Alcohol Concentration Among Motor Vehicle Collision Patients

Research Question

What is the relationship between blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and injury severity, mortality, discharge destination, facility, and healthcare utilization among pedestrians, passengers, and drivers injured in motor vehicle collisions?

Rationale

Alcohol impairment is a well-established risk factor for motor vehicle collisions; however, the relationship between blood alcohol concentration and trauma outcomes is less clearly understood. Examining differences in injury severity, mortality, discharge destination, and healthcare utilization across BAC categories can identify populations at increased risk of poor outcomes and provide evidence to support injury prevention, impaired-driving initiatives, and public health interventions. Consideration of transfer status and timing of BAC testing will improve understanding of alcohol involvement among seriously injured patients.

Airway management after trauma

Intubation, sedation, analgesia and post-intubation hypotension.

View study details

Strategic research priority

Rapid Sequence Intubation, Sedation, Analgesia, Post-Intubation Hypotension, and Vasopressor Use in Trauma Patients

Research Question

Among trauma patients requiring endotracheal intubation, what induction, post-intubation sedation, and post-intubation analgesia agents are being used, which medication regimens are associated with post-intubation hypotension, and among patients who develop post-intubation hypotension, how frequently are vasopressors administered?

Rationale

Post-intubation hypotension is associated with adverse outcomes in critically injured patients. Variability in induction, sedation, and analgesia practices may influence the development of post-intubation hypotension and subsequent management. Understanding which agents are being used, the frequency of post-intubation hypotension associated with those agents, and how often vasopressor support is initiated following hypotension will provide evidence to support quality improvement initiatives and future refinements to the Trauma NB Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) Consensus Statement.

Repeat major injury

Patient and injury factors associated with another major trauma admission.

View study details

Strategic research priority

Trauma Recidivism Following Major Injury

Research Question

Among patients included in the Trauma NB Registry, what patient, injury, and clinical characteristics are associated with experiencing a subsequent major traumatic injury resulting in another Trauma NB Registry admission?

Rationale

Repeat traumatic injuries contribute substantially to patient morbidity and healthcare utilization. Identifying characteristics associated with trauma recidivism can improve understanding of populations at increased risk of recurrent injury and support the development of targeted injury prevention strategies.

Falls & independence

Fall risk, prevention and autonomy among older adults.

View study details

Strategic research priority

Falls, Fall Prevention, and Loss of Autonomy Among Older Adults

Research Question

What is the risk of falling among older adults in New Brunswick, what factors contribute to loss of autonomy, and what barriers and enablers influence participation in fall prevention initiatives?

Rationale

Falls are a leading cause of injury, hospitalization, and loss of independence among older adults. Numerous trauma-specific QIs have been proposed and evaluated over the past several decades; however, their validity, feasibility, and applicability vary considerably across settings. To date, no comprehensive synthesis has identified and evaluated the QIs that have been validated for assessing the quality of care in adult trauma populations. This study aims to identify and characterize validated QIs used to assess the quality of care in adult trauma patients.

Methods: We will conduct a scoping review of the literature following established methodological guidelines. Electronic databases including MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and Web of Science will be searched from inception onward. Studies reporting the development, validation, or evaluation of QIs for adult trauma care will be eligible for inclusion. Two reviewers will independently screen citations and extract data. Extracted information will include indicator definitions, care domains, measurement characteristics, validation methods, data sources, and supporting evidence. Indicators will be classified according to established healthcare quality frameworks, including the Donabedian structure, process, and outcome model and the Institute Of Medicine framework.

Expected Results: This review is expected to identify a comprehensive set of validated QIs spanning key domains of trauma care, including prehospital care, acute hospital management, rehabilitation, patient outcomes, and trauma system performance. The findings will provide an overview of the evidence supporting existing indicators and highlight areas where further indicator development and validation are needed.

Conclusion: This study will synthesize the available evidence on validated QIs for adult trauma care and provide a foundation for selecting indicators to assess and compare trauma care quality across healthcare settings and trauma systems. The resulting inventory of validated QIs may inform future quality measurement initiatives, benchmarking efforts, and consensus-building activities aimed at improving trauma care.

Canadian trauma system indicators

A consensus study to identify core measures of trauma system performance.

View study details

National collaboration
Canadian Trauma System Quality Indicators: A Consensus Study
This project is in collaboration with a national working group from the Trauma Association of Canada (TAC).

Background: Quality indicators are essential for evaluating and improving trauma care delivery within trauma systems. Although numerous indicators have been proposed in the literature and by accreditation bodies, there is currently no national consensus on which measures should be prioritized to assess the quality of trauma care in Canadian trauma systems. This study aims to establish consensus on a core set of quality indicators for evaluating trauma care across Canadian trauma systems.

Methods: We will conduct a consensus study using the RAND-UCLA Appropriateness Method, consisting of an individual online questionnaire (Round 1) followed by a virtual group meeting (Round 2). Candidate quality indicators identified through a review of the literature, quality indicators currently used in Canada, and quality measurement frameworks will be submitted to a multidisciplinary panel of around 30 Canadian trauma system stakeholders, including clinicians, decision-makers, researchers, and patient partners. Indicators will be evaluated according to four criteria: importance, evidence base, actionability, and measurability. Consensus will be defined using RAND-UCLA criteria. Indicators achieving consensus will be retained in the final set, while those not meeting consensus thresholds will be discussed during the second-round meeting and re-evaluated.

Expected results: This study is expected to produce a consensus-based set of quality indicators representing key domains of trauma system performance, including timely access to care, adherence to evidence-based clinical processes, rehabilitation and discharge planning, patient outcomes, and system-level performance. The resulting indicator set will reflect the perspectives of diverse stakeholders and patient partners from across Canada.

Conclusion: The proposed study will establish a standardized set of quality indicators for assessing trauma care quality in Canadian trauma systems. These indicators are expected to support benchmarking, performance evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives, while facilitating consistent measurement and comparison of trauma care across jurisdictions.

Doing Research with Trauma NB

These are the steps and procedures for conducting research using data from Trauma NB.

<details>

Step #1 – Connecting with Trauma NB, Content Experts, and Support

Contact the Trauma NB’s Epidemiologist (Nicholas.MacLean@HorizonNB.ca) to discuss your project to ensure a similar project is not already on-going, that Trauma NB has the data you need, and to connect you to the appropriate support services and content experts.

Context Experts Consultations

Trauma NB will provide the relevant trauma content experts to consult with you on your project, be it clinical experts such as physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, injury prevention experts, data experts, methodological and research experts, and more.

Research and Library Support

You will also have access to Horizon Research Services and Horizon Library Services to provide additional support and guidance to you.

</details>
<details>

Step #2 – Draft Study Protocol

Complete a draft version of your study protocol including the following sections:

Cover Page

Abstract

Introduction

Literature Review

Rationale

Research Question

Theoretical Framework

Conceptual Framework

Trauma NB

About Trauma NB

Trauma NB Registry

Methods

Study Design

Population

Recruitment

Intention to apply for waiver of informed consent and inclusion of pediatric patients (Appendix B and C).

Intervention (Exposure)

Comparison

Outcomes

Data Analysis Plan

Data Storage and Protection Plan

Knowledge Translation Plan

Budget

Conflicts of Interest

Limitations

References

Appendix A

Codebook

Appendix B

Waiver of Informed Consent – Article 5.5A

Appendix C

Inclusion of Pediatric Patients – Articles 3.9, 3.10, 4.6

Appendix D

STROBE Checklist

Appendix E

Recruitment Materials

</details>
<details>

Step #3 – Prepare Ethics Application

Prepare ethics application through Horizon’s Research Services Human Research Ethics Board.
